BRITAIN’S youngest baritone has narrowly missed out on the chance of appearing in the final of the the X Factor.

Teenage opera singing sensation Matthew Crane, 14, a pupil at Gads Hill School, in Higham, was rejected from the competition on Saturday.

Matthew made it through to the last 50 in the boot camp stage of the competition, appearing in front of judges Simon Cowell, Danni Minogue, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh. He broke down in tears when he was told he failed to progress.

Matthew said: “I was really gutted when I was told I didn’t get through. I was really disappointed. But overall it was a great experience, and I have made a lot of friends, some of them I am still in touch with.

“I spoke to Simon afterwards and he told me to keep singing and come back next year. I’m not sure if I will, it will mean I have to go through all of the auditions again. I’m definitely going to try out for Britain’s Got Talent in February.”

Since the show Sony records have been in touch with Matthew to arrange a meeting about his future. He is also due to appear at Dartford Football Club for its anniversary on November 10.

His mother Shirleyanne Williams, 48, said: “We saw Matthew after he was told he hadn’t made it through and he seemed ok, we had no idea he got that upset. We actually felt quite upset that we had put him through that, but he got some good feedback from Simon.

“He went to Simon Cowell’s dressing room and asked him why he didn’t get through. He was told his voice was very specialised, but he still really liked him. He was really happy about that, he wanted that recognition from Simon.”

Matthew, who has been singing for three years, auditioned for the show after bosses lowered the minimum age for contestants to 14. He has performed in front of celebrity fans Jordan and Peter Andre and also alongside Katherine Jenkins and G4.

He was born in Gravesend hospital and lived in Dartford until March 2000 when the family moved to High Halstow near Rochester.

Last year he won the television talent contest Let Me Entertain You and has recorded a single called Memories.
